Place MC Font Menu in the Control Panels folder of your System folder and restart your Macintosh. If the utility installs itself successfully, you will see its icon appear during the start-up process. If the icon does not appear or appears but is crossed out, then something went wrong.
Setting Options
Open MC Font Menu to access the options.
• Consciousness: Awake/Asleep - This option is basically a On/Off setting, only more honest. You need to remove MC Font Menu from your Control Panels folder and restart (or disable it using Extensions Manager, etc.) to truly turn it off.
• Shape: Wide/Tall - Select your preference for wide or tall font menus. If you have a lot of fonts, you might not notice a difference between the settings.
• Assertiveness: Conservative/Aggressive - If Conservative is selected, MC Font Menu will follow a safer approach to taking over display of font menus. If you find that there are font menus in your programs that aren't being displayed in multiple columns, try turning on the Aggressive setting.
• Spaciousness: Cramped/Roomy - For simple font menus, you won't notice a difference between these settings. For font menus that have submenus and/or command key equivalents, Cramped might allow more font names to be displayed at the same time.
• Bigger Names - If the names of the fonts are displayed too small for your liking, turn this option on for a slight magnification. If you turn this option on and you already have "WYSIWYG, Cached" turned on, there will be another delay at the next font menu drawing while images are being cached at the larger size.
• WYSIWYG, Cached - This allows you to see the font names in their actual typeface. The first time a font menu is drawn, it will be slow; but subsequent times, the drawing will be faster. If you turn this one, try turning Bigger Names on so that you can more easily read the names of the fonts.
• Underline Name Instead Of Using Check Mark - When selected the part of each column that normally displays a check mark (or dot, diamond, etc.) is removed, and the name of the checked (or dotted, etc.) font is underlined. This might create enough space for an extra column.
• Match XXXXXX Font - To find font menus, MC Font Menu compares the names of menu items of each menu to the names of certain fonts. This set of three options allows you to choose which font names to match against. Note: If you turn off all three, you'll find that MC Font Menu has taken over most of your menus (font or non-font).
• Ignore that disabled button at the bottom of the window. It is part of an idea for a future version of MC Font Menu.
Using Logging
Open MC Font Menu. Go to the File menu and select Logging to turn on logging. Do not quit MC Font Menu. Perform the actions related to the problem(s) that you are experiencing. Just pretend you are demonstrating the problem(s) to someone standing there with you. At the minimum, select a font from the problem font menu(s). When you are done, go back to MC Font Menu and select Logging again from the File menu to turn logging off. Please minimize the actions that are not related to your problem(s) as the log file can get unwieldy in size.
The log file is called "MC Font Menu Log" and it is on your desktop. Feel free to browse through it; if you understand enough of what's in it, you might be able to solve your problem(s) yourself. Known Issues
Here are a few of the known issues that might affect you:
• In general, you will probably find that only one font menu enhancing utility will at a time. So, there might be conflicts with Adobe Type Reunion, Action WYSIWYG, etc.
• Does not work with Microsoft Word.
• Incorrect submenu placement in hierarchal font menus in CarbonLib-using applications.
• Some pop-up font menus appear centered on your screen instead of over the pop-up control. I might be able to fix this in certain instances; but, for now, it is a low priority issue.
• When "Wide" is selected, it might appear that that your font menus are not as wide as they can be. I plan to change to the algorithm that MC Font Menu uses to try to get more columns.
• While WYSIWYG images are being cached, there will be some flashing at the left end of the menubar. You can safely ignore it. I hope to eliminate this flashing in a future release.
• If you have international fonts installed and you have "WYSIWYG, Cached" turned on, some of the international font names might not display in their own typeface in your font menus. This occurs in certain programs such as WorldText and Key Caps 9.0.
• Please Note: Other issues might be covered in other parts of the manual.
Troubleshooting
MC Font Menu comes with the Conservative setting on as a default so that there will be less of a chance that something bad, like a crash, will happen. If you find that you have font menus that are not being controlled by MC Font Menu, try selecting the Aggressive setting. If you have Aggressive on and something bad, like a crash, happens when you use a font menu in a program, try selecting Conservative. A future version of MC Font Menu will allow you to choose options on a per application basis.
